Okay now I know the world is turned upside down because I agree with Rep. Pete King. In reference to Rep Massie (R-KY) indicating he'll force an in-person vote on the Stimulus Bill, King tweeted
This is exactly what happened in Vermont at our Statehouse. The vote was to enact emergency measures allowing lawmakers to hold virtual meetings from home. Rep. Cynthia Browning of Arlington made a point of order to force a quorum call, twice. This vid is cued up to the moment, which is followed by House Speaker Mitzi Johnson adjourning the House. Rep Browning pulled the same point-of-order routine at 8 minutes in on the vid.
At 17:20 Speaker Johnson gavels the House back in with mask on.
After the vote was successful (a forgone conclusion), Speaker Johnson said “I am very sorry that we all had to put public health at risk to come here today and I want to thank every member of this body.” (at 27:37)
Speaker Johnson did not waste any time exercising her authority as she stripped Browning of her position on the Way and Means Committee. Explaining the move, Johnson stated that Browning’s stunt “unnecessarily required every other member to choose between their duty to Vermont and the health and safety of their communities, peers, and loved ones at home” with a “procedural motion [that] forced 100 people- a generous quorum of members, plus staff, and press- to gather against CDC recommendations, less than 24 hours after the Governor’s stay-at-home order and at a time when infection rates are increasing exponentially in Vermont.”
Alright we’ll see how today plays out but I don’t know if Speaker Pelosi has similar power to remove Rep. Massie from powerful committees [UPDATE: she doesn't, see comments], or if she would be inclined to. Thoughts?
