The Hungarian Parliament passed a law today giving nearly unlimited power to Prime Minster Victor Orbán under the premise of dealing with the coronavirus. Orbán is being given the ability to “rule by decree” without any time limit on his doing so. I know so little about the situation in Hungary, and I wish I could write about this with greater historical and current event knowledge as a background. This seems really scary to me. Given how many of us here on Daily Kos are American and thus focused on how our own country is dealing with the virus, I just didn’t want such a major development like a country in the European Union turning into a dictatorship to go unnoticed here.
A former Prime Minister of Italy had this to say:
Andrew Stroehlein, from Human Rights Watch, writes:
Indefinitely ruling by decree with nearly unlimited power and the ability to imprison anyone for “misinformation” sounds very much like a dictatorship to me.
