this spreadsheet shows per capita covid deaths by state. sorted by the number of per capita deaths.
Some observations…
- The blue states are generally getting hit harder than the red states. 8/10 of the worst hit states per capita are blue. And 9/10 of the least hit states per capita are red.
- there isn’t a clear correlation between state population and per capita deaths. California and Texas are fairly low, but they have large populations.
- It is fair to say that South Dakota and New York are in very different places. For South Dakota, the current death rate is less than the flu while in New York its much higher. This could change of course.
- I looked up “rural index” which is a measure of how rural a state is. There is some correlation here. The more urban states did tend to get harder.
