Wisconsin Republicans, with an assist from the Republican-dominated U.S. Supreme Court, refused to allow an extended period of absentee voting and refused to postpone Tuesday’s statewide and local races, along with the presidential primary. Instead they plowed ahead today with the election. Worse than that, in places like Milwaukee, the election officials were operating only five in-person voting centers for a city of 600,000 people.
There is no reason whatsoever to endanger people like this when mail-in ballots are an existing alternative, one that is being used statewide in California, Oregon, and Colorado. Well, not if the goal is to keep people safe and allow them to exercise their Constitutional right to vote. Of course, low voter turnout benefits Republicans. Which is precisely why they forged ahead on Tuesday. And you better believe this will be their goal nationwide in early November, which happens to coincide with another predicted wave of the novel coronavirus. Take a hard look at the images below and imagine this happening nationwide during a time of extremely high voter turnout, like we see for presidential elections. We need mail-in voting as an option nationwide. Poll workers are largely a volunteer force of older volunteers—anything less endangers them the most!
Yes, it is possible to vote by mail and to keep our elections secure as well. Ballots are sent by election officials and when returned, they are cross-checked just like regular ballots with signatures and addresses. In fact, Sen. Elizabeth Warren shared her plan with Mother Jones and it would require every single state in the union to send a ballot with a return pre-paid envelope to registered voters. Imagine being able to skip these lines and keep yourself and others safe, all while exercising your Constitutional right to vote! It can happen in 2020!
