Miller called it “a moonshot mission.” “The goal is to get as close to a traditional Trump event as possible as we’re entering the warmer months here without having to change too much,” he told Politico.
While former Vice President Joe Biden has supported pushing back the Democratic National Convention from July to August and is open to basing the ultimate decision on advice from medical experts, Trump has predictably refused to push back the Republican Party’s nominating convention in August, Politico reported.
“The president and his team will take every opportunity to make this a forward-looking election, where they can go out and say to all of the country, ‘Here’s what we are going to do on the other side of this crisis,’” GOP strategist Alex Schriver told the news site.
The problem is, we’re not on the “other side of this crisis” yet. The president seems to just want to pretend we are, calling for states to phase in reopening plans and even calling for the return of sports during a call into NBC during a pro golf event Sunday, according to The Hill.
”We want to be back to normal where you have the big crowds where they’re practically standing on top of each other, not where they’re worried," Trump said.
He also advocated for a return to normalcy with his Operation Warp Speed. Like the name suggests, it’s the Trump administration's plan to accelerate COVID-19 countermeasures, but Trump practically admitted during a coronavirus briefing Friday that he doesn’t really care about the vaccine part.
"It's very important. Vaccine or no vaccine, we're back," he said Friday.
The United States' coronavirus death toll jumped from more than 82,000 Friday to close to 84,000 Saturday, and on Tuesday it topped 87,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University & Medicine. That didn’t stop Trump from admiring his work (or lack thereof) Saturday on Twitter.
“We’ve done a GREAT job on Covid response, making all Governors look good, some fantastic (and that’s OK), but the Lamestream Media doesn’t want to go with that narrative, and the Do Nothing Dems talking point is to say only bad about ‘Trump’. I made everybody look good, but me,” he claimed in the tweet.
