The good that will come is the determination to improve.
I am still a bit surprised when Trump and associates find new lows in a kind of “why didn’t I see that coming” sort of way. Pompeo’s grifting, arms sales, and IG firing came in rapid fire. I didn’t get to fully digest the first before the rest was shoveled into my head. At one time, I had thought that Pompeo might be someone whom I strongly disagreed with on policy, but was otherwise a respectable person. That opinion was already in tatters before recent news.
What about the rest of the cabinet? Prejudice is not a good thing. Forming an opinion as to a person’s character, beliefs, etc. limits them and oneself and makes the world worse. But heed the advice of Maya Angelou: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
So, what do I expect these days from Trump associates? I count nine current cabinet and cabinet-level officials whom I consider to be criminal or otherwise acting against the interests of the United States. I don’t really know the others. Of the former members and nominees who have been expelled, resigned, or were withdrawn, I have the most respect for the ones that Trump fired or who resigned, which is to say “not much respect”.
I conclude that in 2020, these folks are part of a criminal organization and they know it. Is that prejudice or a fair judgement?
So, what good will come of all this effluence? After all the violated oaths, a hundred-thousand needless deaths, millions put into poverty and mourning their american dream, there is also righteous anger and determination.
The right has pursued long term organization since at least The Powell Memo (1971):
Strength lies in organization, in careful long-range planning and implementation, in consistency of action over an indefinite period of years, in the scale of financing available only through joint effort, and in the political power available only through united action and national organizations.
We will defeat Trump at the ballot box. It will be entirely consistent with his style to try to cheat or to challenge the results. But, I expect that in the run-up to the election it will be clear to at least two thirds of people that Trump is the biggest looser and the most criminal politician this country has known. I don’t think that there will be enough support for him to successfully maintain any claims at that time.
Can we organize over the long term to keep the planet habitable while improving justice, freedom, and equality? Let’s please do that.
