It came out yesterday that Norma McCorvey - the Jane Roe from Roe vs. Wade which granted women control over their own reproductive choices - was bribed by Forced Birthers to claim she had become 'pro-life'.
And this isn't an unsubstantiated fake claim by McCorvey before she died - one of the 'ministers' who was paying her, Reverend Robert Schenck, confirmed this was completely true. Forced Birthers bribed Jane Roe to lie and say she opposed abortion.
I met Norma McCorvey in 1992, before she announced she was 'pro-life'. I helped bring her to my university campus to speak in favor of women's right to choose. The woman I met at that time was a petite woman who was terrified of the so-called 'pro-life' fanatics. We had to arrange for her to be driven almost up into the area in front of the library where the rally was. McCorvey repeatedly expressed fear of being attacked. I was by her side at all times except when she spoke.
Several days later I had dinner with a truly AMAZING, awe-inspiring woman: Charlotte Taft, the Founding Director of the Routh Street Women's Clinic in Dallas. As a key figure who ran a clinic that provided abortion services, Charlotte was marked for death by the Forced Birth fanatics of Operation Rescue. She regularly got death threats by phone and mail (email was new then). Let me tell you - Charlotte Taft was and is an inspiration to me. When people say I am brave for speaking my mind I often think: NOT AS BRAVE AS CHARLOTTE TAFT. She deserves a post of her own, hell, a monument, a movie, a library.
Charlotte told me that Norma McCorvey struggled terribly. The Pro-Choice movement did not embrace or support her fully. McCorvey came from poverty. McCorvey was in a relationship with a woman. And, more than anything, McCorvey did not want to conform to the model abortion rights leaders wanted from a spokeswoman. She was not a pretty, demure woman; she was rough, unpolished and blunt spoken.
I was young and naive - I did not understand how wealthy donors constrained what activists could do and say. How their expectations defined and limited what was possible. How the aversion of the wealthy to controversy led to Pro-Choice activists choosing a defense only strategy which has resulted in 30+ years of gradually losing our rights everywhere.
This fundraiser, in very small way, is my attempt to refuse to cede ground. To take the fight to the damn enemy. And don't kid yourself. Forced Birthers are every bit as horrific as the villians of the Handmaid's Tale.
Reproductive rights belong to all women. Not just the telegenic ones. Not just the wealthy. Not just the white. Not just the straight. ALL WOMEN.
Please help this tiny fundraiser.
