The struggle for the soul of America has gone on for centuries. And it can be summed up in one simple question.
Should Everyone Be Treated Fairly?
We like to believe that all Americans want a fair America. But reality does not support this belief. Too many (mostly white) Americans are not honest about their answer to this simple question.
Because an HONEST answer to this question reveals which side of the struggle you are on. This endless parade of unjustified police killings of African Americans is part of the struggle. But so is America's long discrimination against African Americans in education, health care, and employment. And many (mostly white) Americans don't want to admit that they are OK with an unfair America.
But that is what we have today. And it is a reflection of what we've always had in America - a great UNFAIR society. A place where African Americans who have done nothing wrong are punished. Excluded from good schools, decent jobs, basic healthcare, and fair treatment under the law. Simply for being black. And millions and millions of mostly white Americans are OK with that. Which is the HONEST truth. Though very few will admit it.
But I am not a pessimist. I believe that politics is the solution. In fact, political power, not violence, is the only tool which has worked in our long struggle towards a fair America. So don't despair. Get involved . . . . . . . in politics.
