As most of you know by now, George Floyd grew up in Houston, TX. I am a Houstonian as well, and live in the same community George did. Today, 60,000 protestors from all walks of life and from all over the city, marched alongside George Floyd’s family.
This footage was taken prior to the march, which started at Discovery Green Park downtown and ended at City Hall. Below was a powerful moment when everyone knelt—fists raised—in a moment of silent defiance and determination.
I have been a DKos community member since 2007 and have thankfully seen changes in perceptions about Texas and Texans. We are not a flaming Red state. We are not mostly rural and white. Houston, for example is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and the individuals that make up our beautiful tapestry cannot be defined by tropes and assumptions. Many were shocked to see black cowboys in protest, but the African American cowboy tradition, and specifically that of Houston’s trail riders, is a long and rich one. Here’s one of Houston’s many trail riding clubs paying tribute to George Floyd on horseback among the steel and glass.
Here’s our mayor, Sylvester Turner along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee:

With the events of the past two weeks, today was a balm for the soul, and I believe Houston represented George well.
