Axios has the scoop on a letter from ranking member Jim Jordan: Axios link here.
I had called out for his subpoena on June 4th with this diary here.
We all know AG Barr has a lot to answer for, notwithstanding:
monkeying with the Flynn and Stone cases
using force against the peaceful Lafayette Square protesters
and now firing SDNY Prosecutor Berman.
Before all you naysayers hop on board and chime in with “he’ll just ignore it”, remember what happened to Nixon’s AG John Mitchell: prison time for a United States Attorney General. Jerry Nadler is not playing games here. He issued Articles of Impeachment against Trump. I am certain that he will use the force of the law to compel Barr to testify. Even if it ends up in court, it remains yet another sign of the lawlessness of this Administration, its President, and its Fixer AG.
I don’t want to strain the Nixon analogy too far, but anything the Democrats can do to isolate Trump from his DOJ in the upcoming months will serve to reduce the amount of mischief from the Commander in Mischief.
Addendum, after getting some additional sleep — Jordan states that he believes that Barr will continue to attempt to defer appearing until after the Coronavirus passed. Trump’s own words, “It’s going away”, make this a hazardous strategy.
My advice to Chairman Nadler is to immediately forward Articles of Impeachment against Barr to the Senate for Obstruction of Justice if Barr does not appear. We should be providing vulnerable Senate Republicans as many chances as possible to distance themselves from Trump. Given Trump’s abysmal polling, and the lessened stakes, there could be more apostasy. Hell, even Susan Collins might find a spine for that!
