There is a benefit of being the party that believes in science. It means that they take time to listen to healthcare officials and scientists, not just their own ego, to develop a plan that will protect the voters that we need in the fall. With states still battling COVID19, the Democratic National Committee sent out email today, and the headline is simple: stay home. Virtual events will provide a new way to nominate our candidate this fall.
From the notice:
Conducting official business without risking public health—After consulting with public health officials about the COVID-19 pandemic, convention organizers are announcing today that they have determined state delegations should not plan to travel to Milwaukee and should plan to conduct their official convention business remotely. The DNC will be in touch with delegations in the coming weeks to share more information about the processes being developed.
This change is significant and makes the Democratic Party not just the party of science, but the party that accepts that new technology can make new opportunities a possibility. Conventions, which grew up out of backroom smoke rooms, where everyone had to travel to a single location in order to negotiate later became media events. With the rise of cable television and other media sources, the interest and appeal of conventions dropped.
It also means that the Democratic Party will have opportunities to show not just great events in Wisconsin, but to highlight the work being done in so many states.
Broadcasting from Milwaukee and across the nation—Four nights of convention programming will be anchored out of our host community, Milwaukee, from August 17-20, 2020. Programming will include live content from both Milwaukee and other satellite cities, locations, and landmarks.
The party of science can also be the party that recognizes the work in the streets, the states, and in our activists as much as the party of the speakers on the stage.
And that’s great news for everyone.
