To those of us that really wanted truly progressive change, first in 2016; and then now in 2020, the insistence that the Democratic nominee be from the established power structure has felt a bit like the David and Goliath story, if instead David had lost the battle.
We know what happened in 2016 after the Dem’ primary fight: younger generations stayed home. And here we are: in the middle of a deadly crisis made much worse by our craven corrupt president. Trump is a dangerous disaster — those paying attention know another four years would most likely destroy what’s left of our democracy.
Early in the 2020 primary season, the rhetoric from big money was even more shrill given the context of Trump’s obvious incompetence: pick a centrist or else. The donors that traditionally backed corporate Dem’s came out very publicly with their threats against Warren and, of course, Sanders.
So, deja vu prevailed: “pragmatism” won again — Biden is the presumptive nominee because habitual primary voters keep biting the bait. A progressive just would be “too risky” with Wall Street and other big money threatening opposition. The DNC must go the with “safe bet” to ensure an appeal to “moderates.”
Well guess what: according to Forbes, Wall Street is yanking the football for the general. Now Biden isn’t in their interests either. From their piece entitled “Wall Street Quietly Begins Warning About A Biden Presidency”:
The main concern for Wall Street if Trump doesn’t win reelection is the likelihood of higher corporate taxes: In December 2019, Biden pledged to roll back Trump’s signature tax cut legislation, which massively boosted corporate profits.
While often expressing more moderate views in public, many wealthy executives and investors privately supported Trump for his tax cuts and deregulation efforts; As some now prepare for a Biden presidency, it’s a noticeable change of tone for Wall Street.
This article came out after 120,000+ Americans have died already; and COVID-cases continue to spike globally after Trump ignored and propagated against doing anything to mitigate its spread.
So there you have it — how much more proof do we need that American aristocrats don’t give a damn about their country? It’s money money money that matters to them. They will knowingly back a traitor to get it.
And giving into their threats rewards the abuser as Goliath continues to beat and extract their bounty; and a plurality of Democratic voters continue to act like Charlie Brown going after Lucy’s football. Wall Street just can’t stop even when they’ve won.
This is the very definition of avarice: their nation trembles under the weight of so many failed and corrupted systems; and these guys don’t care if the whole ship goes down as long as they have their own lifeboats filled with piles of gold bars.
Since like it or not, we have our man Biden. Will this be a wake-up call to pressure him to stand and act on a more progressive platform? Can we stop giving in to our hostage holders desires to hoard more wealth at our own detriment?
If the uprising over the last several weeks for Black Lives Matter has proved — we are more united perhaps than we’ve ever been as common Americans. And we have power if we use it.
And I hope Biden is listening: big changes have to happen in this country or all is probably lost. The majority of our DNC leadership can’t or refuses to see it. They are betting on us being so horrified by Trump this go around that we’ll vote in the status quo’s Biden; and hopefully they’re right. Trump “wins” and our nation — and so much of humanity and nature — is toast.
But once Biden is in (fingers crossed) we cannot let up until he reigns in the monster of inequality and greed. Let this be an enduring American Spring that waters the tree of liberty so a fairer more just system for Main Street grows. And then maybe in 2024 Wall Street will have a little less weight to throw around.
“They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob. Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today.
They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.”
