If you want to know what politicians really think, listen to what they say when their friends say awful things — and when they don’t think anyone’s listening.
Just 16 days ago, Alamance County Commission Chair Amy Galey — a Republican who is also running for the state Senate — had a good laugh about a colleague’s fond memories of illegally assaulting detainees during his time as a police officer.
During a county commission meeting on the use of federal COVID-19 relief funds, a discussion came up about the use of new money for law enforcement. Commissioner Bill Lashley (far right in the picture above) can be heard saying, referring to people detained by the police:
“You can’t do now what we used to when I was on the force. We used to beat the hell out of ‘em!”
In response, Commissioner Galey responds: “Well, well, well.” And then audibly laughs out loud.

This isn’t even Galey’s most recent brush with controversy. Her mismanagement has made national headlines for defying orders from Governor Roy Cooper and state health officials by permitting a speedway race with thousands of spectators.
Given the NC GOP’s generally cavalier attitude about COVID-19 (see our previous blog: Cosplay During COVID — North Carolina Republicans Are Having a Good Laugh), Galey might be in good company. But she is dramatically out of step with this deep purple district which is quickly trending Democratic.
Galey is the Republican candidate for the North Carolina Senate from district 24 (which includes Alamance and Guilford counties). Her campaign has been generally smooth thus far, but both of these incidents have tarnished her well-polished image. Galey would very much like to see these stories disappear.
The Good News!
Democrats have a very strong challenger for this Senate seat in JD Wooten. His race is among just a small handful that will make or break whether Democrats win back a majority in our state Senate this year.
We’re proud to have Wooten as a member of the Long Leaf Pine Slate. A reminder: we are laser-focused on winning Democratic majorities in the North Carolina legislature in this critical year. Learn more about how we’re going to do that at our website below. 👍🏻🙏🏻
The Long Leaf Pine Slate is dedicated to breaking the Republican majority in the North Carolina General Assembly. Learn more about us at LongLeafPineslate.org and follow us on Twitter at @ForwardCarolina.
