The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.

So, this morning I started out for my walk a little earlier than usual because it gets too hot later in the day. It turns out there is much more activity at that time. Right outside my driveway I noticed that the Common Whitetail Dragonflies are suddenly everywhere.
And even though I am still seeing male and female ebony jewelwing damselflies all over the place right now:
I have not yet seen any of the other more colorful damselflies around here yet this year (like this blue damselfly from 2017):
But the most interesting thing I saw happening this morning was the Clubtail Dragonfly in my cover photo (possibly a Dragonhunter?) attacking an Ebony Jewelwing. I took a short video of the event that you can view here:
Here is a photo taken at the beginning of the attack:
One other interesting thing happened toward the end of my walk. There is a spot along the side of the road that doesn’t drain well and so until the weather gets too hot and the water dries up for the summer, it contains stagnant water filled with algae that the frogs like to hide in. When they hear me coming near I will usually hear an “EEEK” followed by a “splash” and they disappear beneath the murky water.
However, it is now hot and has not rained in about a week, so the water is no longer deep enough for them to hide in. So today I still heard the “EEEK” and the “Splash”, but when I looked closely, this is what I saw:
Yes, I can see you! No, I don’t want to hurt you, I just want to take your photo!
