A week ago Trump was hiding in a bunker “inspecting” it for damage as a massive crowd of protestors were literally banging on his gates. A couple of days later he announces an enormous nation-wide crackdown against the “looters and rioters" using U.S. Active-Duty forces, where he considers using tanks and military aircraft against peaceful protestors.
Minutes later U.S. Federal forces were firing rubber bullets and pepper balls into the crowd at Lafayette Park clearing them out so that Trump could walk up, brandish a bible and say nothing in front of St. John's Cathedral.
Trump was riding a high, he was ascendant, triumphant. He had “dominated.”
Just a week later and everything he was trying to do — all the blatant fascism of using U.S. Troops against the American people, the ragtag force of “Secret Police” he had assembled — has crashed and burned. Totally. Completely.
Meanwhile, the little protests he was trying to crush has grown into a massive worldwide movement featuring tens of thousands who now all speak with the same voice: “Black Lives Matter.”
Also, 109,000 Americans have died in a global pandemic.
To understand how massively things have cratered from Trump, let’s just let Colin Powell describe it for us all.
“When I heard some of the things he was saying, he made it clear to me I could not vote for this individual,” Powell recalled. “The first thing that troubled me is the whole birther movement. The birther’s movement had to do with the fact that the president of the united states, President Obama, was a black man. that was part of it. And then I was deeply troubled by the way in which he was going around insulting everybody — insulting Gold Star mothers, insulting John McCain, insulting immigrants and I’m a son of immigrants. Insulting anybody who dared to speak against him.”
“That is dangerous for our democracy, it is dangerous for our country, and I think what we’re seeing now, those massive protest movements I have ever seen in my life. I think this suggests the country is getting wise to this and we’re not going to put up with it anymore,” he stated before calling the president “a liar.”
Colin Powell is still a Republican. Colin Powell is still a Conservative. Colin Powell is voting for Joe Biden this November.
It’s taken a long time, but I think we’ve finally, finally reached the breaking point for some Republicans who now say they no longer support Trump's re-election. Pretty much everyone short of mad-dog crazy than Tom Cotton is jumping ship.
According to a report from the New York Times, prominent Republicans are making it clear to Donald Trump that he won’t be receiving their votes or support as he runs for re-election — and they may endorse his presumptive opponent Joe Biden.
With one conservative commentator writing that some GOP lawmakers see the writing on the wall that the president won’t be re-elected and may soon start distancing themselves from the embattled p‘Far sooner than they expected, growing numbers of prominent Republicans are debating how far to go in revealing that they won’t back his re-election — or might even vote for Joseph R. Biden Jr., the presumptive Democratic nominee,” the report states. “They’re feeling a fresh urgency because of Mr. Trump’s incendiary response to the protests of police brutality, atop his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic, according to people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose private discussions.”

After making his big threatening announcement that he was putting Troops in our cities, the tip-toeing walk-back of that position has been amazing to behold. Opposed by his Defense Secretary, and the head of the Joint Chiefs Trump quietly decided to put a hold on the troops and has now decided to pull the national guard out of DC.
He didn't announce either of these actions, he just did them.
He crawling away from what he wrought like a mouse hiding in the corner.
And the protests? They’ve become transcendant.
“As a historian of social movements in the U.S., I am hard pressed to think of any time in the past when we have had two straight weeks of large-scale protests in hundreds of places, from suburbs to big cities,” NYU history Prof. Tom Sugrue posted on Twitter.
“The breadth and scale of #Floyd protests is staggering,” he continued.
“We have had some huge one-day demonstrations, e.g. March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (1963); antinuclear march in NYC (1982), and Women’s March (2017). We have widespread, simultaneous protests, such as in the days following MLK, Jr.’s assassination (1968),” he explained. “But the two together–very unusual.”
This is just a beginning, this is just a start. We have a lot of work to do, and many miles before we rest.
Here will be posted the detailed events for the next month. [See more articles in this series.]
