In a publicly released letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation director Chris Wray, four top-ranking Democratic lawmakers are requesting the department provide the House and Senate a "classified defensive briefing" relating to an "ongoing" foreign disinformation campaign intended to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.
"We are gravely concerned, in particular, that Congress appears to be the target of a concerted foreign interference campaign, which seeks to launder and amplify disinformation in order to influence congressional activity, public debate, and the presidential election and November," the letter states.
There's little information to glean precisely what foreign interference campaign lawmakers might be referring to. The letter, sent by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Sen. Charles Schumer, and Senate Intelligence Vice Chair Mark Warner, was sent with a classified attachment presumably giving more specifics.
The U.S. intelligence community has repeatedly warned that such campaigns are indeed serious and ongoing, with Wray testifying last year that Russia in particular remains "absolutely intent on trying to interfere with our elections."
