Books often have characters that are not the protagonists, but ones that anchor the story. In Finder by Palmer, the hero meets an elderly lady for only a few minutes and yet she is his anchor for the rest of the story. In Pride and Prejudice by Austin, I think that Lizzie’s aunt and uncle who take her on a trip provide the sense and kindness she lacks at home. In Startide Rising by Brin I believe the anchor in the story is Captain Creideiki. In a Gentleman in Moscow by Towles, I think Mishka the poet friend and Marina, the seamstress are anchors.

The anchors sometimes provide stability in difficult situations or a reason to keep going or have wisdom for the hero to call on. In Little Women, Jo March was both the main character and an anchor for Laurie as was his tutor, John. In Great Expectations, Pip has Joe and the Pockets. In Moby Dick, Ishmael has Queequeg.
