Imagine if you’d gone into a coma about this time of year in 2016 and woke up now. What a shock that would be. Trump actually won? Hillary is now an aging grandma writing books? We have camo wearing Federal Jack Booted Thugs patrolling the streets of our cities with unmarked rented vans from Enterprise battling against anti-Police violence protesters.
Lootings. Riots. Flash-bangs. Tear gas.
We have a global pandemic that has ravaged the nation while most of the rest of the world has survived and surpassed it. 144,000 Americans have died, and yet we hardly respond and react to the loss. The dead are being piled up in mobile refrigerated trucks. It’s the equivalent of our losses during 9-11 times 41, and counting. Yet we hardly blink. We’ve become acclimated to the decimation.
We have concentration camps filled with asylum seeking immigrants, and their children which have been stolen from them — and which are being also ravaged by the deadly viral outbreak, as are our jails.
Russia and Russian-friendly Ukrainians seem to be in control of half our media, filling it with crazed loop-de-loop Qanon-ish conspiracy theories. Hordes of Americans refuse to wear masks to contain the contagion, they stage protests claiming their constitutional “freedom” to spread sickness and death has been violated, they go out and have “CoronaVirus Parties” deliberately exposing themselves to a deadly plague purely out of spite. It is literally batshit insane.
And meanwhile grift, graft, corruption and general incompetence seems have established a potentially permanent chokehold on our government.
We could hardly imagine things might get worse, but they just might.
In the midst of all this, our government now demands that we fully open all of our schools potentially exposing millions of our children to the plague, allowing them to infect their teachers, their administrators, janitors, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and their parents and family to the virus.
Even the CDC has now been co-opted into politics of it all as they release a statement that children should be in school and the “risk is low” even though no one has really evaluated that risk.
The new advice reads: “Schools are an important part of the infrastructure of communities and play a critical role in supporting the whole child, not just their academic achievement.”
Although it says schools must take into consideration local virus transmission rates, the CDC offers no precise guidance on what the cut-off threshold should be.
Asked by a reporter how he would define a hotspot that should not yet reopen its schools, Redfield said: “Right now we’re looking where the percent positivity rate within the community is greater than five percent.”
Right now only 17 states have a positivity rate below five percent. 33 states do not. The idea of opening schools in Texas or Florida where the positivity rate is greater than 20 percent is frankly nuts. It’s particularly nuts for the CDC which just a few weeks ago presented this as part of their recommendations.
The more people a student or staff member interacts with, and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. The risk of COVID-19 spread increases in school settings as follows:
- Lowest Risk: Students and teachers engage in virtual-only classes, activities, and events.
- More Risk: Small, in-person classes, activities, and events. Groups of students stay together and with the same teacher throughout/across school days and groups do not mix. Students remain at least 6 feet apart and do not share objects (e.g., hybrid virtual and in-person class structures, or staggered/rotated scheduling to accommodate smaller class sizes).
- Highest Risk: Full sized, in-person classes, activities, and events. Students are not spaced apart, share classroom materials or supplies, and mix between classes and activities.
So like I said, fully opening schools for in-person classes is literally nuts. But we’re supposed to be taking exactly that idea up as a likely probability.
Yesterday, the first pre-teen died as a result of CoronaVirus.
There are 659 new cases in the county, bringing the total to 44,746. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said the county is seeing a trend of declining case numbers due to masking orders. Still, he said residents must continue to follow precautionary measures like wearing masks:
[...]
Jenkins also said today marks the first pre-teen death in the county of a 5-year-old boy. He said it’s part of a “sharp uptick in children getting COVID”:
“Sadly today we announced the death of a five year old child from COVID-19. This is our first pre-teen death here in Dallas County. I want to point out to the public that we have seen a sharp uptick in children getting COVID. We currently have over 1,450 children under age 18 who’ve tested positive since July 1. Parents, it’s imperative that children, like everyone else, follow the guidelines to stay safe.”
Yes, people should stay safe. This disease does infect children. Children can and do die from it. Children can spread this disease. Can you imagine what the response will be when the first set of children start contracting the virus from being in school? Can you imagine when the first of those children dies? And the next? And the next after that? Then their parents start to contract the virus and die?
This is no joke people. We are dancing with super-charging this viral infection with thousands of sustained super-spreader events. If this happens the way that Trump has demanded we won’t have 1,000 deaths per day, we’ll have 10,000 deaths per day.
And still we continue slouching our way towards the devastation.
It’s time to wake up. It’s time to say “No!” This can’t be allowed to happen.
We have to stop taking direction from this man. This mentally fucked up man. We have to realize that the worst thing about Trump isn’t the virulent racism, it’s not his obvious fascistic authoritarian tendencies, it's the fact that he’s shitheaded.
He gets the wrong idea in his head and it STICKS there. It gets frozen like a broken phonograph record. This is why he keep repeating the ridiculous story about his “acing” his cognitive test, as if it were some kind of IQ/Intelligence test. It’s a test to see if you are Non Compos Mentis. It tests if your brain is functioning.
His brain is functioning, but the personality in the driver’s seat is completely wacked.
He thinks that overwhelming shows of force and violence is what is needed to respond to people in pain, pleading to be heard concerning wounds that go back 150 years. Can you flashbang your way out of a century of vicious police terrorism?
Can you tear gas away the thousands — two thousand every year — who have died at police hands? Yes, more of them are white in total. But No, they tend to be black and Hispanic about 3 times as often. When they are unarmed it gets worse.
According to The Counted in 2015 there were 106 unarmed white victims of police violence, 79 were black. It changes from year to year, but using that as an example -— and we have to use five year-old Guardian figures because the Federal government doesn’t keep accurate records of police violence — since black people are only 12.5% of the population this means that unarmed black people are killed at a rate 3.6 times greater than whites.
You can’t Storm Trooper your way out of that. It's not a fluke. It’s not a lark. It’s a sustained systemic problem that has been going on for decades. If Trump has his way, it’ll keep going on. And on, and on.
There’s a lack of empathy here. We’re piling up the dead like cord wood. The Khmer Rouge would be proud. Envious even.
And the higher rate of those dead, by cop or by virus, are black people.
This is why Trump doesn’t care, because he doesn’t have to care. Black people aren’t his constituency, they aren’t his voters. Dead black people doesn’t faze him. He doesn’t give a shit. He’ll never give a shit.
He’s going out trying to scare suburban moms that Joe Biden is going to bring dirty, scummy minorities and violence to their neighborhoods.
He was like this from the beginning. When the sleeper went to sleep, he knew what was coming.
We know who this guy is. What know what he is.
He needs to be gone.
