120,000 Florida homes will be lost due to rising sea levels caused by climate change over the next 10 years. While only 4% of the world’s population, United States is responsible for 14% of the world’s carbon emissions.
In Florida, our residential building is concentrated in single-family home development, leading to sprawling communities where every house owns at least one vehicle. This means more concrete, more acreage, less green-spaces, and more carbon. This is unsustainable! Enough is enough!
We need to operate with the fierce urgency of now! We can no longer sit on the sidelines and expect others to do the right thing for us and our environment!
Here are my (Shawn Williams, running for FL HD78) environmental priorities:
~ Ban all offshore oil drilling operations and explorations
~ Ban all forms of well stimulation (fracking and matrix acidization)
~ prevent the development of new fossil fuels in Florida
~ Grow mass transit and include it in the Department of Transportation work plan
~ Promote use of Electric Vehicles by expanding charging infrastructure
~ Transition to 100% renewable energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions
~ Modernize the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (FEECA) through the rulemaking process so that we can have meaningful efficiency and solar goals
~ Prevent water pollution at its source

~ Protect Florida’s natural springs
~ Promote walkable communities
~ Protect ranch & agricultural lands from development
~ Promote sustainable farming.
You say that’s a pipe-dream. You’d be absolutely correct if you keep the same legislators or the same majority in Tallahassee. 20 years of single-party rule in Tallahassee is enough! We need a new guard that will address the existential threat of climate change. I will fight like hell for Florida’s environment to implement smart growth & development, increased mass transit and walkable communities.
