Welcome to what is the 896th original profile here at “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day”, where we’ll be discussing the U.S. House Representative from Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, Mark Green, who was first elected in 2018 in a race he won by 34 points to replace Marsha Blackburn, who chose to run for Senate that year, and that should tell you exactly how conservative the district is. Prior to that, Green served six years in the Tennessee State Senate, and in 2017 was briefly nominated to be the Secretary of the Army but withdrew after several bigoted comments attributed to him against Muslims and transgender Americans were revealed by journalists. He referred to a transphobic bill as how he aims to “crush evil”, claimed psychiatrists refer to transgender as a “disease” (maybe a half century ago), and stated he would try to prevent anything about Islam to be taught in schools because “Muslims think Jesus wasn’t born from a virgin” (which is false, they consider Jesus as one of their prophets).
What has quickly become clear to us is that Mark Green is a former physician and has abandoned the Hippocratic oath in favor of conservative ideology. When, about a month before he was sworn into Congress, he went on a rant about how vaccines cause autism, we were concerned.
But we’re currently watch this dips*** get into arguments with sane members of Congress about the increased protection provided by wearing a face covering or mask during the Covid-19 pandemic. He in fact, claims such a simple precaution is “irrational”, angrily citing in a hearing that he saw a jogger wearing a face mask on his way to the capitol in late June:
“As I came in today, I saw a gentleman running on the sidewalk. There was no one within a hundred yards of the guy, yet he was wearing a mask while running. This speaks to the irrational fears this dishonest representation of the data by the media has caused.”
This of course is f***ing stupid, because at some point during their run, that jogger would certainly pass by another human being.
It should come as little surprise, then, that he pretty consistently rejects science, believing in Personhood, rejecting that climate change is man-made, and that he denies the science behind evolution.
Yes. Mark Green is that bad. So you probably wouldn’t be surprised that his voting record looks like this:
- January 23rd, 2019: Rep. Green voted against HR 648, because he was gleefully enjoying the longest government shutdown in history.
- February 28th, 2019: Green votes against HR 1112, a bill which would have required universal background checks on all firearm purchases, and close the gun show loophole.
- March 7th, 2019: Green votes against HR 183, a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism as a hateful extension of intolerance.
- March 14th, 2019: Rep. Green votes against HJR 46, which sane members of Congress voted for to reject Donald Trump’s “national emergency” regarding the U.S. border and his attempts to reallocate funds for a border wall without Congressional approval.
- April 4th, 2019: Mark Green is one of 158 Republicans who choose to vote against the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act, likely because they feel the 2nd Amendment remaining absolute is more important than preventing people with a history of domestic abuse from owning a firearm (which statistics show, makes them more likely to use those firearms against women in their lives).
- May 17th, 2019: Green votes against The Equality Act, which would have prevented discrimination towards Americans based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.
- June 4th, 2019: Rep. Green votes against the Dreamers Act, because he’s too xenophobic and partisan to care about immigration reform.
- July 16th, 2019: Mark Green votes against a resolution to condemn Donald Trump for his racist statements that four people of color in Congress should “go back where they came from”.
- October 23rd, 2019: Green is one of 41 Republicans who, while staring down the possibility of Donald Trump being impeached, stage a ridiculous publicity stunt in response by crashing a classified impeachment inquiry hearing for a “protest”.
- December 18th, 2019: Green ignores his Congressional duty to hold a president who has been proven to commit high crimes and misdemeanors accountable and votes against the impeachment of Donald Trump.
- May 15th, 2020: Green votes against the HEROES Act, to further support the healthcare industry and citizens affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, as we stated, is highly conservative, with a +20 Republican lean in the Cook Partisan Voting Index. Mark Green goes into the election in November to face off with Kiran Sreepada, a political newcomer who was compelled to run for office after the 2018 Government Shutdown. It’s likely that we’ll be hearing more from Green as the Covid-19 pandemic continues, and his anti-vaccination views could be potentially embarrassing for the GOP if as debates over federal funding for the public to be given any vaccine that is developed come forward in the next term of Congress. So don’t be surprised when that happens.
