It may be useful to contemplate the complete 1970 mission statement for the Post Office:
The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities. The costs of establishing and maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people."
Did anybody see the word "profit" in there? DeJoy should have that statement read to him and be asked that. The Congressperson who asks it should be sure to reclaim any time taken up by complete silence.
Also, I think that the Democrats should pass a bill that any private company that seeks to acquire US Postal Service routes and facilities may do so only if they accept all the limitations now put on the Postal Service: Pre-fund retirement for all employees for 75 years within ten years using low-yield government bonds, commit to not raising prices in response to changing fuel and other costs, don't handle shipments of alcohol, and deliver to the entire country, not just major metropolitan areas, for the same low price. Think there will be a rush of applications?
