I think spiritual ecstasy might be related to love and team spirit. I remember like a decade ago when the Lakers won a championship in the Staples center, the fans went nuts, burning cars and looting stores. If you feel love for the winning team, it's very emotionally satisfying. The team could be the church or the sangha or other religious group. I think ecstatic destruction, like the Lakers fans, could be one of the normal forms of spiritual life, like with human sacrifice or potlatch. Not that I'm recommending human sacrifice. It's an altered state, I think. I think that taxation the economic institution might be frowned upon more than tithing the spiritual phenomenon. The Afghanistan war is spiritual like this, like alcohol is spiritual. Maybe war is spiritual, like an ecstasy of destruction. It involves suffering, like the monk's denial of carnal pleasures. Conservatives tend to value this kind of spirituality. Material things become spiritual when you ritualize them. Sports have spiritual meaning, in that they involve rules and discipline and giving 100%, and have unwritten rules, not encoded.
