This is a kind of under-the-radar story unless you live in one of these eight Texas cities which were alerted to the presence of a brain-eating amoeba found in their water supply (read article).
Many American’s belief that scientific institutions like the CDC and Dr. Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) tell the truth has been eroded under Donald Trump.
Now we have a story very much involving a life or death disease in Texas where, if one contracts it, the survival rate for Covid-19 looks like a walk through the park where the worst that can happen is you’ll have an allergic reaction to a bee sting.
From the story:
Representatives from the Texas Department of Health Services collected water and tested samples from the splash pad for the CDC, and on On September 25, three of the 11 water samples tested positive for
Naegleria fowleri (read updated Wikipedia article).
The CDC sent the test results to the TCEQ, and the Texas agency then required that the Brazosport Water Authority issue a Do Not Use water advisory for their customer base, the statement reads.
The CDC says that while Naegleria fowleri infections are rare most are fatal. From 2009 to 2018, only 34 infections were reported in the United States. Of those reported cases, 30 people were infected by recreational water.
According to the CDC, 145 people were infected from 1962 to 2018 and only four survived.
Trump thinks wearing a mask is a personal betrayal to him unless you happen to be close enough to sneeze on him. Almost all of his followers agree with him. See How did mask wearing become so politicized?
.
Now The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued a water advisory to residents served by a local water authority warning customers not to use any water due to the presence of the deadly brain-eating amoeba. They have relied on the CDC to identify the amoeba.
I hope they take this more seriously than many Texans take the warning about Covid-19. Here’s a June 20th Trump rally in Texas from the Houston Chronicle.
