In preparation for this diary, I thought I should check out Jaime Harrison’s Wiki page (don’t dog me now). I was struck by the description of him as an “American politician.” I subsequently learned that Wiki describes all American politicians as such.
What does it mean to be an “American politician,” I wondered? I think it should mean a bit more than just geography and nationality. I think it should mean that you are dedicated to fighting for the ideals for which this country claims it stands. That the core tenet of your political platform should center around the idea of making this country a more perfect union.
My Grandma was fond of saying that “there’s some good in the worst of us” (she never met donald trump), and so I choose to believe that there must have been a time when Lindsey Graham was an American politician in the truest sense of the term ... a time when he thought to serve the country to the best of his ability. If I’m correct, then that time has long passed. It is abundantly clear that Lindsey Graham now sees his main job as that of running interference for Putin’s despicable puppet. South Carolina deserves more. South Carolina deserves a senator who prioritizes the needs — and there are many — of South Carolinians. The country deserves/needs a Democratic-majority Senate. The world deserves a functional American Senate. Millions of lives are at stake.
Now, Jaime is running for U.S. Senate to fight for opportunity for all South Carolinians, and he’s willing to work with anyone to do it. Because when a rural hospital closes, or coverage for pre-existing conditions is threatened, the health of all South Carolinians is put at risk. These days, Wall Street is doing great, while middle class South Carolinians feel like they’re just barely hanging on. Jaime will fight to invest in schools and training, and to end the student loan debt crisis.
Fighting for affordable and accessible healthcare is personal to Jaime. Jaime’s grandfather worked for decades paving roads in and around Orangeburg. To this day, if you travel to Orangeburg, there’s a good chance you’re driving on roads made by his grandfather’s hands. But for years Jaime’s grandfather didn’t have healthcare, so he didn’t know the pain in his legs was diabetes until it was too late; Jaime saw his grandfather go to the hospital to have his leg amputated.
As the next U.S. Senator from South Carolina, Jaime will carry these values and lessons with him every day. Jaime knows that what you say matters — and that character counts.
