[Note: I had a whole lot of other things I thought I’d write about today, and hopefully that will come tomorrow. But right after Mr. Brillig was struck by another bout of what Casa Brillig calls The Stomach Thing (it happens every couple of months and his doctor thinks it’s likely his digestive system being super-sensitive after surgery and radiation post-appendiceal cancer decades ago), we learned his 80+ year old father fell early this morning, 911 was called, and he faces partial hip replacement surgery tomorrow. I’ve been a little scattered.]
I took Vorpal for a walk a couple of days ago. Now, you need to know Vorpal is NOT a dog who loves walks, especially when it’s cold. She also has a keen sense of direction and an internal compass that always points towards home. When we’re walking away from the house, she stops every two seconds to sniff things. She zigs, and zags, and looks like she’s got to investigate every leaf, tree, clod of dirt and puddle of water. You’re saying “but dogs DO that!” Yes, yes they do.
But.
The moment we turn around, and this can be one block or seven from home and we may have meandered several streets over and are going in a totally nonlinear direction, ALL sniffing and stalling behaviour stops. She charges out in front and her inner secret racing greyhound takes over.
I know this to be real because if you turn around again, or do NOT go in the expected direction that leads home… the sniffing and stalling behaviour starts again.
I have another theory today… she’s been racing towards January 20th, when we finally turn towards home again. And truly, aren’t we all racing towards Inauguration Day? If you’re wondering how long until the magic moment, see this countdown timer.
