I’ve (we’ve) been worried about the security of the capitol and the inauguration since the terrorist insurrection on the 6th. The decision to hold something of an inaugural event, albeit heavily guarded, seemed rather irresponsible to me.
So, there’s this...
I find it staggering that after the terrorist insurrection on the 6th, the subsequent “chatter” on various social media venues, and the radicalization of law enforcement and the military, that they are still attempting to have some sort of a public ceremony. I’d prefer they do these things.
1) Nix the Public Inauguration Event: Simply scrap the public ceremony. Period. We don’t need it. Yes, i know that such events can be psychologically positive and societally solidifying, but the safety of the participants is paramount.
2) Hold Secret Inaugural Function(s): Have a secret ceremony, live-streamed, with Biden being sworn in. As an added safeguard, have Harris get sworn in at a different location/observance. (I don’t know if that’s possible, but i believe it is.)
3) Excuse Nancy Pelosi: Nancy Pelosi should be nowhere near the inauguration in D.C. on the 20th. In fact, she should be removed to a secure bunker in an undisclosed stated, until after the event. Having all the dem leadership, especially the chain of command, present in one location on that day is absurd.
I’m getting a bit upset by the “we aren’t afraid” stance, rather than thinking in practical terms. We don’t need a damn “event.” We need a new President Biden and a lovely new VP Harris, both alive and healthy on the 20th after being sworn in. That’s it. No frills, no hoopla, just our new chief executives ready and able to do the job. The terrorists don’t “win” if there is no shindig on the 20th. Rather, the country (and world) wins if our new Pres and VP make it into office unscathed. The dangers are legion, going well beyond uprisings within the National Guard. Let’s not let any of those possibilities come to fruition, shall we?
