I was originally going to title this “Top Comments: Goodbye Edition” but I worried people would think it was either about the countdown to Inauguration Day, OR that I was trying to skirt GBCW instaban rules by using a community diary to announce my departure. It’s not about Trump, and I am NOT leaving (I really hope that’s not a disappointment! :-)).
As many of you are doing during these Pandemic Times, I’m binge-watching TV shows. I have not watched this much TV in a loooooong time, but here we are. Please- wear a mask, get vaccinated, make good choices, and in doing so save me from watching ALL the Netflix, HBOMax and Prime video and thereby being forced to subscribe to Disney+ and Peacock.
Today I watched the last episode of a series I first met in book form and then watched through five season, The Magicians. I knew that the fifth season was the last, and when it dropped on Netflix I held off for a bit, knowing I wanted to savor these characters I’d grown to know and love despite their quirks, faults, and all. But today I watched the final two episodes, and as the storylines resolved and we drew towards the final scene, I did NOT want to say goodbye.
The final episode was everything I could have wanted. It wasn’t a happy ending, not really. Or, rather, it was, but not in the way you’d expect a series to end, with all the characters happily moving into the future together. I did in fact get teary-eyed as (no spoilers, I promise!) the Big Bad was redeemed, Eliot found love, Josh and Margo found pizza, and babies brought magic. I didn’t want it to end. But I can imagine where the story goes from here, and that’s good.
There have been a number of series endings I remember fondly. Babylon 5. Star Trek: The Next Generation. Northern Exposure. Six Feet Under. The Vampire Diaries. And of course the greatest of them all, M.A.S.H, which wikipedia sayeth had a Nielsen rating of 60.2 and a 77 share, which translates to 125M viewers. in 1983. I was in college and remember huddling around the TV in the student union with lots of others to watch.
The more recent series The Good Place was wonderful and fun, and I admit freely to holding off on watching the final few episodes for months, because I Did. Not. Want. to say goodbye to these characters.
What series endings do YOU remember and love? Do you ever think back to the characters as if they’re old friends, fondly remembered? Am I a sentimental sap? Hop below the Story Break, peruse the Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures, and join us in the comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
