Yesterday, Louie Gohmert, a member of the United States House of Representatives, made a public call for violence in the streets after his lawsuit designed to overturn the legally certified results of the 2020 presidential election was thrown out of court.
Let me say that again. A member of Congress is calling for the citizens of the United States to engage in open rebellion against the United States. The fact that this is batshit crazy Louie Gohmert doesn't detract one iota from the seriousness of this event.
18 USC SS 2384 Seditious Conspiracy:
"If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both."
Attempting to overturn the results of an election, for no other reason than you don't like the outcome, may be little more than "sore-loserism". Inciting others to violence because your attempt failed is Seditious Conspiracy. I don't think you need a law degree to connect the dots here.
Where is the FBI? Why wasn't Louie Gohmert taken away in handcuffs? Why isn't he sitting in a jail call right now? I'm not talking about political retribution, here. I'm talking about the rule of law, a concept supposedly held sacred in this country. And, as I read the pertinent law, what Gohmert did yesterday constitutes a felony, and a Federal one at that.
Political junkies are always playing "what if" games. Mostly they amount to little more than intellectual exercises designed to further one kind of ideological discussion or another. In this case, I think it means a lot more. In 2016, "what if" Hillary Clinton had challenged the results in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Donald Trump won these 3 states by razor-thin margins. They were also his complete margin of victory in the Electoral College. What if Secretary Clinton, or other Democrats, went on MSNBC and told people that "violence in the streets" was the only possible response after court after court and judge after judge dismissed or rejected more than 60 lawsuits seeking to overturn the certified vote counts? What would be the response of Republicans like Louie Gohmert? Does the phrase "Lock he up!" ring a bell?
Louie Gohmert has likely committed a grievous crime against the peace, liberty and laws of the United States. He MUST be charged with this crime and face trial as prescribed by the laws of this country. Failure to do so would amount to aiding the conspiracy. Where is the FBI?
