Just saw across the MSNBC screen that Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont and the new President Pro Tempore of the Senate, will preside over Trump’s impeachment trial. This is now being reported also by CNN.
No more “Hands Off” John Roberts to call balls and strikes.
UPDATE: I should note that the Constitution provides the Chief Justice presides ONLY when the impeachment trial involves the President. All other impeachment trials in the Senate are handled solely by Senators. In this case of a FORMER President, there is probably enough legal uncertainty for the Chief Justice to make the argument that he has no role.
