While everything about the pandemic is horrible and seems never-ending, I have found a small, but detectable silver lining: disabled people with funds (i.e. credit cards and financial resources) have never had such an amazing array of delivery services available.

I don’t get out much for the past 5 years, but stuff now comes directly to me. Stores that never delivered and never even considered delivery services, like my local Vape store, either deliver or ship things directly to you.
Groceries are delivered for a fee from many sources. Unless you want to pick out your own fruit and vegetables or order salads and lunch meat from the deli, everything from the store that you want comes to you. Just order on the computer (don’t forget to include a tip for your personal shopper/grocery delivery person) and within a day or two — you get groceries!
Hundreds of local restaurants deliver or have arrangements with Uber Eats, Grub Hub, or Door Dash to deliver the most excellent food with a few taps on a computer or phone app (remember to include a nice tip for the driver). Frankly, I haven’t eaten this good in years and my expanding waist indicates how much I’m enjoying it.
There’s a lot that sucks, but that’s what makes finding a silver lining in all those gray clouds extra special.
It slightly makes up for the fact that going to the clinic or hospital for specialty appointments is impossible with no car valet service. If you’re disabled, walking from a parking lot blocks away isn’t happening. It’s hard to see any doctor for asthma or respiratory troubles because the schedulers and door check-in people always assume you have Covid and send you away or deny you an appointment.
It’s nearly impossible to get needed in-home services like service calls for misbehaving internet or non-urgent apartment maintenance issues, but the reasons are understandable. Nobody wants to get infected or bring infections home. Yet living with those unresolved issues is a pain and sometimes the pandemic becomes a quick and easy excuse for inaction.
Some things, however, are unchanged. We’re in the middle of getting an expected foot of snow here in southeastern Wisconsin and the snow plows are out in force as they always are plowing and salting the roads. The local Ace hardware was featured on the now socially distanced news broadcast as people got curbside pickup of shovels, snow blowers, and buckets of ice melt and masked shoppers inside browsed for last-minute items before the storm.
Outside, the snow is falling, masking everything in fluffy white. It will stay pretty for a few days until the wind blows it off the tree branches and what’s on the ground turns ugly gray from the effects of snow plowing and shoveling. Until then, we enjoy the beauty, stay home if we can and try to be careful if we need to go out on snow and ice covered roads.
Discovering a bit of a silver lining peeking out from behind ever dark clouds has been a blessing. Have any of you found a silver lining in the past terrible, awful, most horrendous year? If so, please relate in the comments. Good news is always welcome.
