When your wood rack is beginning to show its age and you have accumulated old cedar fencing and 4x4 posts it is time to get busy and build anew from old.
The old wood rack as you can see was on its last legs, err props and since I am now “retired” I have no excuses left for not getting it cleaned up and rebuilt.
So having a number of already planed cedar fence boards, see prior Old to new II (diary and a handy planer I got to work.
Several pieces of old redwood decking were around along with some truly ugly 4x4 pence posts which had rotted out at ground level.
These would be the uprights and lengthwise boards for the rack.
They looked just like new after a run through the planer although I can tell the blades are getting dull so after this project I will replace the blades and see if the old ones are worth getting resharpened. Note blade sharpening is a skill and I go to the local pro for this.
To get the lengthwise boards squared up I use a speed square and several Jorgensen clamps…..every wood worker needs these clamps so remember this for birthdays and holidays folks.
Once the boards are in place I
then cut cedar planks as a decking for the wood.
This used up some of my wood pile and created new smaller pieces for…...hmmm, well perhaps small keepsake boxes next.
Now
Now of course a project is not a project without glue and clamp work so the end pieces on the top needed attention.
This is why every wood worker always needs more clamps….so they can tackle projects that require more clamps!
Now with a little staining, some help in transit from garage to garden we have a finished project which is being admired by my wife’s Star Trek Gnomes.
They approve and of course then I had to load in the wood and get a nice afternoon fire going.
This is also the area I use for my Dutch Oven cooking, the bricks were gifted from a neighbor who was tearing a patio out and they have been very useful for the last 30 years.
The rack is only partly filled but don’t worry I still have more to move. Oh, and in the background is a garden tool shed which was another project I did many years ago….not a old to new though.
