Apparently, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Susan Collins (R-furrowed brow) are trying to secure support for a resolution of censure against Trump, since it now seems abundantly clear that not enough Republicans have the integrity, decency, patriotism, and courage to convict the corrupt traitor currently stewing in Mar A Lago.
It’s not entirely clear if this would be in lieu of a Senate trial. Based on what I have read, it seems like they only may move forward with this if there are definitely at least 10 Republicans publicly on board, thereby overcoming a filibuster.
Trying to withhold judgment on this — especially if it’s not in lieu of a trial but in addition to (a censure of a former president after leaving office would be unprecedented) — but it strikes me as giving a pass to Republicans so they will be able to avoid having to defend a vote to acquit a profoundly corrupt traitor while still allowing them to say that they did something unprecedented and didn’t support sedition. If they also bypass a trial it would also eliminate very public coverage of the abundant evidence which is already out there — as well as other stuff which hasn’t emerged yet.
I like Senator Kaine — he’s one of my Senators — but the more I think about this, if this was intended to be in lieu of a trial, again, this would be staggering political malpractice. Thoughts?
