January 6th, 2021, will probably be entered in history books as one of those ‘rollercoaster’ days. This eventful day started with a Democratic sweep in the state of Georgia, giving Biden the control of the Senate he desperately needs. Just as important, this provided a sigh of relief for the nation that desperately needs a functioning congress to support a competent, conscientious President like Joe Biden. Georgia upset was no trivial matter. It shattered many records that we all are proud of — Raphael Warnock, an African American pastor, preaching at Martin Luther King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, is the first African American senator ever from the State of Georgia. John Ossoff, a 33-year-old Jewish Senator, is the youngest and first Jewish senator from Georgia. What’s more, they both defeated the wealthiest (Loeffler) and second-most wealthy (Perdue) caucasian incumbent Senators. It was a classic David beats Goliath story, multiplied twice, with the bonus of control of the US Senate, which leads to the first Jewish Majority Leader of the US Senate — Chuck Schumer.
Varoon, my 16-year-old son, Veda, my 13-year-old daughter, and I have campaigned, donated, and dreamt of this day. So, we stayed up all night as the results rolled in and were ecstatic in the morning. Varoon and I made plans to celebrate in the night as I drove him to his high-school to cap off the day with Biden’s certification in the US capitol.
The universe had different plans for us. Trump’s incendiary “I am not going to concede, ever” speech riled up his base supporters, who saw his calls to action as their command to attack the US Capitol. Some planned on taking the lawmakers hostage, and some tried to steal the electoral college votes; some even orchestrated atrocious plans to conduct a show-trial and execute the democratically elected leaders of congress. As these events unfolded over TV around noon, I was confident that the Capitol police had planned for this riot for weeks. I had no doubts about their abilities to thwart the attacks of these rioters, arsonists, and protestors.
I was wrong.
The people that attacked the US Capitol desecrated the people’s house, and ‘temples of democracy’ are not protestors. They are terrorists. They are not expressing their first amendment right to support their leader, and they are insurrectionists committed to squashing democracy itself. They are not rioters, trying to raise their voice for what’s right; they are arsonists with evil intent to burn down the nation’s most sacred building, with the five hundred and thirty-eight lawmakers inside it.
Scarily — the US Capitol police were woefully unprepared for this. They ran inside the capitol to focus on protecting the lawmakers, and in that effort, the US Capitol was breached around 2 pm yesterday. Insurrection in the heart of democracy of the most powerful nation of the world, we all assumed it would never happen, but it happened yesterday.
January 6th, 2021, will be remembered forever as the ‘Day of Infamy,’ said Chuck Schumer, the current Senate Minority leader and the future Senate Majority leader. No one could have said this any more succinctly than this.
Where was our President of the United States while this was unfolding? Watching TV, probably celebrating his ‘supporters’ for willing to die for him and willing to kill for him? the leader that was supposed to be our Commander-In-Chief has denigrated himself to ‘Arsonist-in-Chief’ or ‘Seditionist-in-Chief.’
After Pence deployed the national guard, Congress resumed its business as a sign of resolve. While some heartless morons like Gaetz, Hawley, Cruz, and other disgusting lawmakers continued their pre-planned efforts to steal the election, there were glimmers of sunshine. Some lawmakers opened their hearts and woke up from their ill-conceived plans, and proclaimed enough-is-enough. Some Senators made heart-warming speeches and explained how the insurrectionists strengthened their resolve, despite the idiotic challenges of Hawley. Instead of heeding the preposterous suggestions of Ted Cruz, they saw through his evil plan to hold the Democratic Republic hostage, and ignored him and thwarted his evidence-free challenges.
I am proud of the way our lawmakers conducted themselves last night. They displayed strength and conviction and stood up to the terrorists.
I am proud of Mitch McConnell for his courage to stand up to Trump and proclaim that overruling the presidential election would ‘damage our republic forever.’
I am proud of Mike Pence for stating the obvious that he does not have the ‘‘unilateral authority’ to reject electoral votes.
I am proud of the Democrats in the Senate for showing respect to the idiots, arsonists, enablers, and disgusting liars like Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, John Kennedy, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Roger Marshall, Tommy Tuberville. These six senators decided to side with the ‘arsonist-in-chief,’ Trump. They violated their oath of office and committed acts of sedition against the democratic republic last night.
The rollercoaster day ended with us going to sleep; rest assured that our nation is in good hands. At least it will be, fourteen days from now. With Biden in the office, Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mitch McConnell leading the Senate, I am convinced that America will regain the respect of the rest of the free world.
