Today I wrote and sent a letter to Mitch McConnell. I don’t know if he will ever read it but, after what has gone on this week, I felt I needed to do something, anything, about Senators Hawley and Cruz. I wrote a respectful letter, and tried to appeal to his sense of self-preservation. In any event, here it is. Let me know what you think.
Dear Senator McConnell,
The assault on the Capital building, and one of the branches of government, was a travesty, brought on, in part, by the actions of some Senators in your party, most notably Senator Josh Hawley, and Senator Ted Cruz. I demand that every senator that voted to not recognize President-Elect Joe Biden’s win, and inflame the mob that stormed the Capital be immediately censured, removed from all committee appointments, and be asked to resign their seats.
You’re an old man. Your days as a senator are numbered. Is this the Republican party you want to leave behind? Under Donald Trump’s leadership, the Republican Party has lost the House, the presidency and now the Senate. Furthermore, your party lost two formerly reliable states, Georgia and Arizona, in the electoral college, and both of the Senate seats in those states as well. While Trump’s base may form the core of the party now, it’s proven to be a radioactive core. Your party is bleeding supporters as never Trumpers are now swearing to never vote for a Republican again at any level of government.
Better to tear off the band-aid of populism and endure some temporary pain, then continue the long time bleeding out of republican support amongst the professional class, independents and the suburbs. Stand up to Trumpism by first censuring the Senators who inflamed a mob to insurrection, removing them from all committees and demanding they resign their seats. Next stand up to Trump and demand he resign, or that Pence and the Cabinet immediately invoke the 25th amendment, or support his immediate impeachment and removal.
Your legacy is at stake Mr. McConnell, and as a long-term public servant I imagine you must have some regard for the institutions of democracy in our country. David Koch, one of the largest donors ever to the Republican party, is now espousing regrets for enabling the populist fringes of the party. Today I read an article indicating that outraged business leaders will not be donating to Senators Hawley and Cruz in the future because of their actions in igniting these deplorable acts against our government.
Take the necessary steps to secure your legacy, and ensure that democracy does not die here in America. Censure, remove from committees and demand resignations from the complicit senators, and take steps to remove Donald Trump from office immediately.
Sincerely,
