During the last year and a half, our small businesses have suffered. Small businesses, whose storefronts and unique wares and services provide a town with its flavor and character, have struggled to stay in business, keep team members, or even retain supplies necessary for their products. Perhaps they closed their doors due to being unable to pay their team. Perhaps their team got so small there were impossible burdens on owners, which led to burnout and going out of business. Perhaps the need to close down during Covid quarantine led to the application of small business loans to keep doors open. But now, as we open our state and stores with less restrictions, these businesses need support to rebuild. Perhaps they’ve spent more capital on safety precautions such as cleaning supplies or even air filtration that has tipped their budget in unexpected ways. According to Governor Northam’s website, “small businesses are the backbone of so many Virginia communities,” says Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball. Our delegates need to be there for Virginia’s small businesses to help them rebuild. This can be accomplished through livable wages and reinvesting resources toward individual workers as well as recovery funds and resources. For each business, that need looks different.
Jeffrey “Doc” Feld intends to meet with small businesses to hear exactly what those obstacles are and what their present concerns are in the present economy. What are the needs of your small business? What are your priorities? What do you need to succeed? What about partnering with local banks and credit servicers to provide more capital resources? These are the types of questions Jeffrey “Doc” Feld asks. He goes into the community, meets with business owners and finds out about their own personal journey so he knows what to do next in Richmond. Each business has their own needs and listening to actual experiences is the first step to appreciation, and actual change.
