I diaried the story of Weedon Island here:
www.dailykos.com/…
For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently in Florida for the winter. :)
The site is now a nature preserve with several miles of trail. There is also a small museum centering on the Weeden Island people. It’s been closed due to the pandemic for a year and a half, but it finally re-opened, so I visited again.
Some photos:
The centerpiece of the museum is this dugout canoe, one of the longest found in North America
The canoe has a number of holes along the length of its bottom, and nobody knows what they were for
The stern end of the canoe is broken off at around 40 feet, so at one point it was even longer
The upturned bow end is still pretty intact
inside the museum
Stone tools from a variety of people who inhabited this area over the centuries
An intact pot
Because there is little suitable stone here, many tools were made from shell
More shell tools
Bone tools
