On December 9, 2021 (World Genocide Day), we are going to bring our message to Harry Winston/Swatch. We want them to stop selling #GenocideGems that fund the Myanmar military.
The Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) is running out of money as international sanctions are having an impact. They are holding a gem fair and expo to try to raise more money for their brutal rule. We want to cut off that funding.
Myanmar produces more than 90% of the world’s rubies and jade, and these stones command the highest prices on the international market. The military dominates the gemstone industry in Myanmar. Its extensive commercial interests in gemstone extraction and trade mean that the military profits when high-end jewelry retailers – like Harry Winston (owned by Swatch) – buy Burmese gems for their collections.
Without this money, they would not be able to continue their reign of terror.
Since the brutal coup d’etat on February 1, 2021, 1,294 protestors have been killed. Another 10,502 have been arrested. Members of the military have boasted they will kill anyone they see on the street at night. They have hoarded life-saving oxygen and medical supplies during a global pandemic. In order to restore democracy to this nation, we need to stop funding the military.
If you are in New York City, we are meeting in front of the US Mission to the UN at 10:00 am. We will then march to Harry Winston’s flagship store and headquarters on 5th Avenue to give them our petitions. Can you join us?
