Right-wing politicians have had the obsession of glorifying violence, wanting to express their own fantasies of it.
There have been incidents of actual violence committed by those on the right, but other than that it's been verbal violence, or an implication to use violence. Republican Rep. Paul Gosar put out an infantile example of implied violence when he shared a photoshopped anime video showing him killing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The video uses the anime series called Attack on Titan, which is about the "heroes" doing battle with giants called titans who eat humans. AOC's head is photoshopped on one the the "villians" and Gosar's appears on one of the "good guys."
There's also the heads of other politicians, both Republican and Democrat, appearing on various characters.
After the video received millions of views there was outrage expressed against Gosar. AOC herself responded to the video in a Tweet: "So while I was en route to Glasgow, a creepy member I work with who fundraises for Neo-Nazi groups shared a fantasy video of him killing me. And he'll face no consequences bc [a GOP leader] cheers him on with excuses. Fun Monday! Well, back to work bc institutions don't protect woc." Another example is the tweet of Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu: "This is sick behavior from Rep. Gosar. In any workplace in America, if a co-worker made an anime killing another co-worker, that person would be fired." And in another tweet, this time from Speaker Nancy Pelosi, she called for an investigation by law enforcement.
Gosar is behaving like a victim in the aftermath of this video. After getting censured, Gosar tried to play innocent, claiming that the altered video wasn't meant to "espouse violence" against anyone. It symbolized a fight between Democrats and Republicans over the immigration issue. A spokesperson from Gosar's office shrugged it off, saying, "It's a cartoon. Relax." Easy to say when you are desensitized to violence.
Gosar not only tried to justify the video, he retweeted it. Showing no remorse, he blamed Democrats for the problem because of violating his "right" to "free speech." Is that the right to violate the rights of others? It's looking as though Republicans/conservatives/right-wingers think they have this "right" but disguise it by trying to play the victim while expressing rhetoric about freedom and choice. But for anyone using common sense, it's all a pretension disguising a dangerous agenda. People like Gosar want to go backwards in time, perhaps to the 1950s or even the 1890s. White privilege was openly the norm. People of color and women were treated as though they were not on the same level as white males. Patriarchy, homophobia, racism, classism and sexism were close to "normal."
Unfortunately, nowadays, there are those who have traditionally benefitted from white privilege and are pissed off. They have sometimes behaved like spoiled children or worse yet, like thugs. The United States is changing, expressing more of a multi-culturalism. But those who are against it want "their" country back; they want to "make America great again." Notably the Trumpites.
In the demented mind of Paul Gosar, violence is a means to justify an unjustifiable end, however much he denies this. Gosar is your typical ugly American.
