Honest question, not trying to start a pie fight. Prior to Friday, the infrastructure bill couldn’t pass the House because House progressives were using their refusal to vote for it as leverage to compel the Senate to pass the Build Back Better bill through reconciliation before or at the same time as the House passage of the infrastructure bill. On Friday, most House progressives finally changed their minds. What changed their minds?
I am genuinely curious and have been searching the news and DKos diaries for answers to this, but haven’t found any answers beyond very oversimplified claims about how “House progressives caved” or “House progressives came to their senses” or “House progressives were duped” or “Biden/Pelosi were super good at persuasion.” Surely there was something more to this—something new, that wasn’t offered before, must have been offered to the House progressives right before Friday’s vote to get them to change their minds and become willing to vote for the infrastructure bill after holding out for so long. What was it?
