Where fashion and politics intersect by Hal Brown
Below: What a glorious change from they whom I am loath to mention by name.
The “be best” First Lady who is reportedly jealous of the current First Lady made the news for one of her Valentine’s Day tweets:
Melania Trump’s Valentine’s Day Tweet Didn’t Mention Donald & It’s So Awkward
Watching the president wearing jeans and a black leather bomber jacket with First Lady Jill Biden wearing a classy ankle length cloth jacket made me wonder about their conversation before they went out to be photographed looking at the White House Valentine’s Day display. Did she say “honey, are you really going to go out in that outfit” or more likely she knows him so well that if she said anything it would be along the lines of “nice outfit, Joe.”
Joe Biden isn’t the first president to wear a bomber jacket.
Donald Trump had two basic styles he permitted himself to be photographed wearing, a suit and tie or a golf outfit. Occasionally we went open collar to show that he was a regular guy. I am sure he was none-too-pleased at how unflattering photos of him playing golf went viral.
His choice of what to wear led to articles like this.
Donald Trump tried the bomber jacket and prompted stories like this:
President Obama pulled it off...
… President Clinton
George W. Bush wore one but he actually was a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. Bush had scored only 25 percent on a "pilot aptitude" test, the lowest acceptable grade and was eventually kicked out. However at least he knew how to fly.
Unfortunately for him he is known for photos of him after he exited form the co-pilots seat in the flight suit he wore for his televised arrival on the USS Abraham Lincoln declaring mission accomplished.
Of course to don’t have to be a pilot to wear look great in a black leather jacket.
You don’t have to be a president, TV, or movie detective to wear a black leather jacket. You can just be a New York City detective wannabe wearing a black leather Hugo Boss jacket (enlarge).
Trump was the president who believed living in a gold plated residence was classy...
and who saw himself as an emperor.
President Biden in stark contrast is the Amtrak president.
Last month The University of Fashion blog published PRESIDENTIAL STYLE: JOE BIDEN’S SARTORIAL CHOICES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS with a photo of President Biden relaxing in a leather jacket.
You may be wondering whether future President Kamala Harris will ever sport a black leather bomber jacket. From looking at the photos here VEEP CHIC: BREAKING DOWN KAMALA HARRIS’ EFFORTLESSLY COOL STYLE I’d say this is the closest she’d come:
