During the past four years, many people have said irony is dead—but this is ridiculous. The sleazy guy who tried to destroy our Constitution and American democracy in the process is making a constitutional argument? And is supported in that calumny by 45 Republican so-called Senators?
Of course we should expect this. It is typical Republican thinking, is it not? They believe the rules apply to everyone else, never to them. So of course, the former *resident thinks he can use constitutional provisions when he needs them, and ignore them, subvert them, or worse, when he doesn’t.
In fact, it looks like his entire case is built on that very idea, and a very Republican idea it is. “The First Amendment?” he says. “Hmm. I can use that to justify my attacks on the Constitution, even though that amendment is actually part of the Constitution. Oh, and by the way, anyone else expressing their First Amendment rights, such as to criticize me, well they should be thrown in jail. After all, that’s how they do it in Russia!” (See Navalny, Alexei)
— Apologies for the short diary, but thinking about this awful human being and his cadre of racist enablers for more than a few minutes at a time makes me nauseous.
