Hay seed told me he went out to Sardis Lake (in north central Mississippi) and saw Gulls and Pelicans, I was compelled to see for myself, The main reason for my visit was his description of how low the lake level was. The Corps of Engineers purge the lake every year to prepare for the Spring rains that swell the Mississippi River. The low water is an unusual sight for me.
Another look at the water level numbers.
Just to remind people where I am located, here is a map.

Migrating birds stop at all the three major lakes in Mississippi. The birds congregate in smaller areas where there is still the main channels flow. Here is an example.
Another group of photos shows some of the birds that I saw flying around. There were many more that were in the trees, grounds, etc, but that will be another diary for the future. Here is a video of a few.
Below is a photo of the lower spillway. The Tallahatchie River still flows when the spillway is opened. The video below lets you see the volume of water that passes through it.
One more video of Pelicans and Gulls around the spillway.

Until Spring gets here, and the bugs emerge in force, I will offer this Bud of the Day. Oregon Grape is a plant seen over the entire country. The one below grows down the street. An evergreen with leaves similar to a Holly (expect that the leaves grow in pairs). The pretty flowers will develop into purple berries that will feed lots of birds during the Winter months.
I won’t be here until 4 pm (Central time) because of work. I want you to enjoy these items until I can chat with you all then. Stay safe and be well.
