In the horse-drawn era before the popularity of the automobile, a coupe was a carriage which carried two people. For the automobiles of the 1930s, the coupe was a single seat vehicle which carried the driver and one or two people. Some coupes came with a rumble seat which folded out of the trunk and which could carry an additional couple of people. Rumble seat passengers were, of course, exposed to the elements.
