My name is Joshua Weil, I'm a high school math teacher from Central Florida. I'm not a politician. I don't have vested interests, and I’m not in this for me. Like a lot of Americans, my biggest apprehension about large government was the people who are in charge of it, but lately that has changed. With each passing cycle, I have been inspired and amazed by the generation of servant leaders who are stepping forward and claiming their spots in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. People like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Deb Haaland, Ilhan Omar, Raphael Warnock, Cori Bush, and Jon Ossoff have stormed into Washington and given a wearied nation hope that Build Back Better might actually be more than just words. I follow our government in action, I see how much money we spend, and the ways in which we spend it. We have everything we need to end homelessness in America today, the only thing we're missing are the Senators who care enough to make it happen.
Marco Rubio has been our United States since 2010, and he has made it abundantly clear that the only Floridian he cares about is Marco Rubio. After Pulse, did he fight for gun control in his state, No. Then Parkland happened, and how did he respond? He got on national television and looked right at the teenage survivors of a mass shooting and told them in no uncertain terms that he worked for the NRA. Marco Rubio doesn't even fight for the legislation that is important to him, like the immigration reform he spent his entire career crafting, then withdrew from consideration at the request of Donald Trump. If he won't fight for the issues that are important to him, he'll never fight for the issues that are important to you.
More than ever, we need to nominate, support and elect progressive voices all across the country. The Republicans in the House and Senate understand that far-right conservatives appeal to more people than moderate conservatives, and when far right conservatives engage in compromise and collaboration with moderate Democrats, the conservatives win every time. The only way we can fight back and ensure that this country actually moves forward, and builds the types of systems that can improve American lives across the board is to elect hard-working progressives, who refuse to accept the status quo.
Democrats haven't won a statewide race for Governor in Florida since 1994, and have only won 3 out of the 10 Senate races over that same period of time, despite the fact that there are more registered Democrats in our state than there are registered Republicans. The state Democratic party continues to nominate and support the same type of candidate, and the results are predictably the same. We cannot allow the needs of the people in this great and beautiful state to continue to be neglected by the likes of Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. It's time to put forward a strong progressive candidate, someone who understands what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck in Florida, and cares about fighting for the people. We can beat Marco Rubio, we can put a voice into the highest legislative authority in our country who will fight for Medicare For All, for the Green New Deal, for Universal Housing, for a $15 Minimum Wage, for real Criminal Justice Reform, but it's going to take all of us. I'm Josh Weil, and I'm running to be YOUR Senator.
I’m not asking for your money- but I am asking you to help grow our movement so we can show the establishment that progressive candidates have a fighting chance.
