Remember the outrage when Trent Lott said this.
The nub of the controversy was his comment that "we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years" if Mr Thurmond, who ran a campaign to keep blacks out of white schools and neighbourhoods, had won the presidency in 1948. Mainstream media did not immediately pick up the story, but after a number of weblogs publicised the comments and explained their significance, a backlash built up against Mr Lott's leadership.
As a result of the controversy Trent Lott resigned as Senate Majority leader. Moreover Lott was fired as a lobbyist from Squire Patton Biggs
The prominent Washington law and lobbying firm Squire Patton Boggs fired former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, one of its top lobbyists, on Monday as Lott was preparing to decamp for another firm.
The firm gave no reason for the Mississippi Republican’s sudden departure and declined to answer questions about it. Mark Ruehlmann, Squire Patton Boggs’ chairman and global chief executive, said only that the firm had “decided that it is the right time to make a change in the leadership” of its public policy practice.
Sen Johnsons comments are as bad and arguably even worse than Sen Lott’s. We don’t even have to get into the fact that Johnson is a key enabler of Russian disinformation. Some may argue that Lott was a majority leader and his racism was visibly worse, however, Ron Johnson is the ranking member of the permanent subcommittee on investigations. He needs to be stripped of his leadership position as well as his assignments to the foreign relations, budget and commerce, science and manufacturing committees.
There are a lot of GOP kooks and whack jobs in Congress but nobody is more dangerous than Ron Johnson. Ro Jo has got to go. It’s so past time for this to happen.
