House Democrats introduced a resolution to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress on Friday, March 19th.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D, CA-34), and was supported by 72 Democrats and (unsurprisingly) 0 Republicans.
The list of supporters includes some of the biggest and best names on our side: Joaquin Castro, Ted Deutch, Veronica Escobar, Pramila Jayapal, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and (of course) Maxine Waters.
According to CCN, Gomez felt he had no choice but to do so given her violent rhetoric and calls for the murder of elected Democrats in the past:
"I take no joy in introducing this resolution, but any member who cites political violence and threatens our lives must be expelled...I believe some of my Republican colleagues, and one in particular, wish harmed upon this legislative body. I'm not saying this for shock value. It's the conclusion I drew after a member of Congress advocated violence against our peers, the speaker and our government."
The resolution would require a 2/3 majority vote to pass, meaning it is extremely unlikely to happen; Republicans refused to assist in removing her from her committee assignments, and it can be expected they will likewise refuse to expel her. Greene has accused House Dems of waging a “war on House Republican Women”, a response which does nothing to address the argument House Dems have made and continue to make: someone who advocates for the execution of members of congress is unfit to serve in congress.
