Mitch McConnell addressed the press today and said that he was for preserving the filibuster because there was no racial history behind the senate procedure used to block legislation. The senator, who seemed to forget the 24 hours, 18-minute long filibuster over the 1957 voting rights act by South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond.
Here’s some background, Mitch:
The filibuster was used to stop free states from joining the union. It was used to prevent anti-lynching legislation. Time after time after time, civil rights have been on the chopping block and the filibuster has been at the root. Voting rights were sacrificed. Anti-lynching laws took 120 years to pass due to the filibuster.
It’s OK, Mitch. You don’t want to acknowledge the truth. But we all know it.
