California Rep. Devin Nunes is famously suing the Twitter parody account @DevinNunesMom, but in real life, his mom does his fundraising committees’ FEC reports.
It’s not that weird, of course. I mean, I don’t get it personally, but that could be because my mom’s voted for every GOP presidential candidate since Eisenhower and still somehow thinks Donald Trump is human. No, the weird part is that Nunes’ mom appears to be really bad at her job. Like, really bad.
But you know what they say: Like mother, like son.
Nunes has two fundraising committees—the Nunes Victory Fund and NEW PAC—and his mother, Diane, has served as treasurer for both of them. And while Nunes is also suing Devin Nunes’ Cow, his actual cow presumably has nothing to do with his FEC filings. It just looks like she does.
The Daily Beast:
All but one of the campaign’s 2020 FEC reports filed by Nunes’ mom contain material errors, according to the [FEC’s Requests for Additional Information]. Flaws include duplicate contributions from GOP mega-donors such as Home Depot CEO Bernie Marcus ($50.5 million career giving), billionaire energy mogul Kelcy Warren ($23.8 million), and investor Rex Sinquefield ($12.2 million).
The FEC also said NEW PAC failed to disclose a donation from health insurance provider Humana. An amended report filed Thursday shows the donation amount was $5,000, noting that the item was returned by bank on Jan. 22.
In total, the FEC sent the Nunes Victory Fund and his campaign six RFAIs each for the 2020 election cycle. Some corrected reports prompted second notices. But it’s not the first time Toni Nunes has come under federal scrutiny. In the 2018 cycle, the FEC sent the campaign eight RFAIs.
Okay, that’s not good. Guess it’s even harder to fire a congressman’s mom for incompetence than an actual congressman.
Of course, while Nunes has presumably been successfully weaned, he hasn’t removed the umbilical cord so much as unplugged it from his mom and reattached it to Donald Trump’s quaggy undercarriage. Whereas he once drew sustenance and succor from his mother, he’s since planted his flag firmly in the steamy adipose folds of our frothing former POTUS.
In other words, it would be easy for him to 86 his mom for cause, but he daren’t offend the dyspeptic wheel of cheese who gives him his marching orders and imbues him with purpose—as sad and pathetic as that purpose may be.
Meanwhile, the litigious twit’s case against @DevinNunesMom continues, as absurd as that case may be. As The Daily Beast recounts, Nunes’ suit alleges that “[i]n her endless barrage of tweets, Devin Nunes’ Mom maliciously attacked every aspect of Nunes’ character, honesty, integrity, ethics and fitness to perform his duties as a United States Congressman.”
Unfortunately for Nunes, in civil lawsuits you have to show damages. In other words, you need to actually have “character, honesty, integrity, ethics and fitness to perform [one’s] duties” before you can lose them, which might make his quixotic lawsuit even less winnable.
Well, if he loses, he can always run to Mommy. She simply has to be a better nurturer than a bookkeeper. Right?
