I don’t buy the bipartisanship is dead line being spread by republicans, the media and many folks here at Kos. Neither do most Americans, not when you get to where the rubber meets the road.
77% of voters backed the stimulus plan when its Democratic origin is not disclosed vs. 71% who did so when the Democratic label was included.
59% of GOP voters say they support the $1.9 trillion stimulus package; 53% of GOP voters who were told it was the Democrats’ plan still backed it.
It’s just a simple fact the coronavirus relief/stimulus has broad bipartisan support. Of course that doesn’t fit the republican leadership, especially McConnell’s, M.O. of doing everything they can to make democrats unsuccessful. So devoid of alternatives or better ideas their only hope of regaining power is to make America fail and try to blame dems for what they are deliberately doing.
It’s time to call the republican leaders out. If they say no republican support we say not true, nearly 6 in 10 republicans support it, you don’t get more bipartisan than that. Then we turn around and ask them why the refuse to represent the views of their own voters, why they are lying to them and why when 59% of republican voters support the bill none of their elected reps do.
At the same time every dem that gets in front of the cameras needs to declare loud and clear that this bill is bipartisan as demonstrated by the strong support of republican voters, it’s republican leadership that’s refusing the bipartisan will of the people.
Goin forward this needs to be the message on virtually every major issue from climate to voting rights to infrastructure spending to raising taxes on the wealth to pay for it. We dems are working on the bipartisan issues the American people care about and earning bipartisan support of the voters and we won’t let the republicans in congress who refuse to support the bipartisan will of the American people to stop us and if that means we suspend the filibuster to do so than that’s what we’ll have to do. If the republicans in congress continue to act against the bipartisan will of the people and force us to.
