OK, Moscow Mitch may have lost a bit of his edge lately, pulling lame stunts like biting the corporate hand that feeds him and then having to hunt for a bandaid. And without question he is a son of a bitch (insert obligatory apology here to female dogs and their offspring). But he’s not dumb.
Unless, that is, you think he was dumb for refusing to overturn an election he knew Joe Biden had won. Trump sure thinks so.
Trump slashes at McConnell as he reiterates election falsehoods at Republican event
Former president Donald Trump called Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell a “dumb son of a bitch” as he used a Saturday night speech to Republicans to blame him for not helping overturn the 2020 election and reiterated false assertions that he won the November contest.
This speech, mind you, was supposed to be a call for party unity. I’m reminded of a line from an old Star Trek episode: “Yeah, but I gotta be the unity.”
Trump spent much of the speech, with many senators in the room, lashing into his former ally in personal terms, often to cheers from the party’s top donors. He falsely claimed that he won the Senate election for McConnell in Kentucky and attacked his wife, Elaine Chao, who served as Trump’s transportation secretary.
Why Chao? Because, on top of being dumb, McConnell is an ingrate:
“I hired his wife. Did he ever say thank you?” Trump said. He then mocked Chao for resigning in response to the Jan. 6 events and Trump’s behavior that day.
The rest of his speech was, as one might expect, a litany of grievances and complaints and totally blatant lies, including this whopper:
He falsely said that most Democrats also believe he won but just won’t say so out loud, an attendee said.
Oh, and he wishes Mike Pence had had the “courage” to help steal the election for him. This the same Pence who, latest reports reveal, was begging the Pentagon to “clear the capitol” because Trump wouldn’t do anything.
From a secure room in the Capitol on Jan. 6, as rioters pummeled police and vandalized the building, Vice President Mike Pence tried to assert control. In an urgent phone call to the acting defense secretary, he issued a startling demand.
“Clear the Capitol,” Pence said.
….
With Trump not engaged, it fell to Pentagon officials, a handful of senior White House aides, the leaders of Congress and the vice president holed up in a secure bunker to manage the chaos.
There is no bottom to this bottom feeder, but if he takes the GOP down with him (especially including that “dumb son of a bitch”), I will, as Churchill once said he would do if Hitler invaded hell, make a favorable reference to the devil.
